Yesterday, a rumour surfaced suggesting that Windows Mobile 7 (or Windows Phone Seven as it might be known) would come in two editions (Business and Media). Today, another rumour has surfaced that contradicts that rumour. According to MobileCrunch.com, Windows Mobile 7 is about to take a page out of the Apple book.
The latest rumour suggests that Microsoft is adopting an approach more similar to that of Apple than to what it has done in the past with Windows Mobile. Using the Zune HD kernel, there will be no background processing, no system resource access and no threaded processes. Based on Silverlight and .Net, the user interface will be similar to that of the Zune HD with the addition of phone features.
While device specifications have not been revealed, it appears that only one screen size will be supported and that OLED will be recommended. Microsoft will provide official specifications and device manufacturers will have no choice but to adopt them or pass on the new operating system. Maybe those leaked specifications were not so farfetched after all.
Things get even more interesting: Windows Mobile 7 will not be backwards compatible with previous versions. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft woos developers to the new platform.
